Green Party Makes the Eco-Move

Green Party! Green is a powerful color that evokes rest. The San Francisco Green Party, however, was not resting on Saturday, April 19. In fact, they were actively demonstrating their commitment to the environment. Susan King, move coordinator for the Green Party, had a deadline to move from their old office at 1910 Mission to their new location at 1928A Howard, just 10 blocks away. To observe the upcoming Earth Day, Susan came up with the wonderful idea to make the relocation an eco-demonstration project by using only bikes and trailers. The only exception was that they moved their sub-zero refrigerator by truck. Not bad!

The SFBC and the Bike Hut publicized the Green Party's need for move volunteers and lent equipment -- six bike trailers and two cargo bikes -- to the effort. A volunteer even brought his own trailer to chip in!

On the move date, 13 people arrived to help. This human-powered caravan muscled office goods, including five computers, file cabinets, a sofa, books, chairs, and other office supplies. In four quick hours, everything was in the Green Party's new home! When asked what it was like to move the eco-way by using bikes and trailers, Susan smiles. She says she had everything boxed up. "It's easier than you think." Thank you Susan, the Green Party, and enthusiastic activists for staying green in moving to a new home.
