2014 Member Survey Results

The results are in from our biennial Member Survey — Here’s looking at you, San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members!

Membership is at the core of the SF Bicycle Coalition. Members fuel our work through their volunteerism, campaign participation and annual financial support. Our Member Survey is a useful tool to understand the demographics and priorities of our 10,000+ membership, information that will help guide our work in the years ahead. A huge “thank you” to the nearly 1,400 members who completed this year’s survey. Below are some highlights.

Where do our members live?

There are San Francisco Bicycle Coalition members in every part of the city, and we’re proud to engage members in campaigns across the city.

Where SF Based Members Live

Where San Francisco based members live.

Women are pedaling our work forward. Nearly 40% of SF Bicycle Coalition members identify as female, a higher share than the 32% of regular SF commuters and 27% of regular commuters nationally.

We ride on the regular. Over 80% of our members ride their bike more than once per week and almost all of our member say that they ride throughout the year for fitness or recreation.

What would get us riding more?

  1. Protected bike lanes
  2. More bike lanes in general
  3. Secure bike parking

Membership means representation. The top two reasons members join the SF Bicycle Coalition’s are our advocacy efforts and their desire to be represented as a person who bikes.

Improving the biking experience. What do our members think matters most for better biking in SF?

  • Awareness of bicyclist issues among politicians
  • Fair and equal police enforcement
  • Driver education
  • Spot improvements, such as lights and intersections
  • Increasing the number of people who bike
  • Physically protected bikeways

Investing more resources in professional driver education. Members identified driver education as the area they would most like to see the SF Bicycle Coalition increase its efforts in.

Members are the backbone of our organization, providing funding, people power, vision, guidance and a face for the SF Bicycle Coalition.
