The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition works to promote bicycling for everyday transportation. Our member-based grassroots organization is considered one of the largest, most active and effective advocacy groups in the country. For more than 40 years, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has a proven track record of winning better bicycling improvements.
Position Overview
The Bicycle Advocacy Communications Intern will gain experience in bicycle transportation planning and non-profit advocacy in San Francisco. This internship will focus on how we use strategic messaging across all forms of media to educate, engage and activate diverse audiences.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Support policy team with communications, including
- Drafting content for mass emails regarding advocacy campaigns
- Drafting blog entries for our website
- Drafting social media posts for Facebook and Twitter
- Drafting outreach materials for our advocacy campaigns, such as flyers or petitions
- Take part in planning sessions to develop strategic messaging around our street campaigns
Secondary Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist policy team with grassroots outreach, which may include streetside outreach or phone calls and emails to individual members
- Assist policy team with research to strengthen our knowledge base around our advocacy campaigns
- Attend meetings, hearings or events relevant to our advocacy campaigns
Required skills or abilities:
- Strong written skills with some experience in professional and public settings
- Some experience and/or knowledge of copyediting to produce high-quality communications
- Ability to work on tasks independently, set personal and professional goals and manage time productively
Desired skills or abilities:
- Ability to translate written communication in either Cantonese (traditional Chinese) or Spanish
- Experience with HTML and graphic design for our online and web media
Required dates for this internship include:
- January 2016: First day orientation (exact date TBD)

This unpaid internship offers a flexible schedule with a 10-15 hour/week minimum commitment. This is chiefly a Monday through Friday internship, with occasional evenings and weekends. Interns are expected to make a three-month commitment, which may be extended. While the position is not paid, we are happy to work with any academic requirements the intern may have to help them earn course credit for their efforts.
