The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition works to promote bicycling for everyday transportation. Our member-based grassroots organization is considered one of the largest, most active and effective advocacy groups in the country. For more than 40 years, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition has a proven track record of winning better bicycling improvements.
Position Overview
The Bicycle Advocacy Outreach Intern will gain firsthand experience in bicycle transportation planning and non-profit advocacy in San Francisco. This internship will focus on grassroots outreach to engage our existing membership and connect with new opportunities.
Essential Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist policy team with grassroots outreach and base building for advocacy campaigns, including:
- Streetside outreach during existing events we hold or participate in, such as Service Stations or Sunday Streets
- Individual emails and/or phone calls to members to engage them in our campaign work
- Door-to-door merchant outreach and neighborhood canvassing
- Drafting talking points for our staff and members at outreach events
- Take part in planning sessions to develop strategies and goals around our outreach
- Attend meetings, hearings or events relevant to our advocacy campaigns
Secondary Roles and Responsibilities:
- Assist policy team with communications across all forms of media, including mass emailing, website updates, social media and print media
- Assist policy team with research to strengthen our knowledge base around our advocacy campaigns
Required skills or abilities:
- Strong communication skills and an outgoing personality, particularly in phone or face-to-face situations
- Some experience working in professional settings
- Ability to get around the city as needed for outreach events and meetings
- Ability to work on tasks independently, set personal and professional goals and manage time productively
Desired skills or abilities:
- Ability to speak either Cantonese or Spanish with conversational fluency
Required dates for this internship include:
- January 2016: First day orientation (exact date TBD)

This unpaid internship offers a flexible schedule with a 10-15 hour/week minimum commitment. This is chiefly a Monday through Friday internship, with occasional evenings and weekends. Interns are expected to make a three-month commitment, which may be extended. While the position is not paid, we are happy to work with any academic requirements the intern may have to help them earn course credit for their efforts.
