Update: The new bike lanes were approved and implemented in February 2016!
Paging all the West Siders heading to Market Street: New bike lanes are being proposed for Page Street!
Whether you Wiggle it or take Page Street, the connections from the Panhandle to Market Street are getting more and more bike-friendly, with your support. The latest proposal from the SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) is for a downhill bike lane on Page Street as you approach Octavia Boulevard.
Please support a bike-friendly Page Street.
As cars queue up to make the right-turn onto Octavia Boulevard, there isn’t a good place to continue biking on Page Street towards Market or even to wait at the red light. Thanks to great input from our members at the walking tour in September, the SFMTA has proposed a green, center-running bike lane to get bikes to the left of cars as well as a generous bike box for waiting if the light at Octavia is red.
The first public hearing will be on Friday, Nov. 13 and we’ll make sure your petition signatures and comments are received by the SFMTA. Your support will help set this project up for success when it goes to the SFMTA Board for its full approval, currently scheduled for early next year.
While this one-block bike lane is a good and much-needed start, we’re hearing from our members more and more that we need to think big when it comes to Page Street. As the number of bikes on Page Street continue to skyrocket, we need to make sure the street design catches up so that biking and walking are prioritized through this residential street connecting Hayes Valley, the Haight and beyond.
Please join in supporting both the near-term proposal for Page Street as well as a more bike-friendly future for the full length of Page Street, from Stanyan to Market, by signing the petition below!
