Why Bike to Work Day is the Best Day to Volunteer

Meet Meghan. You might recognize her as a Bike to Work Day poster child, or from her volunteering and biking all over the city. Meghan has been an incredibly active member and volunteer ever since she joined in 2011, and she will be volunteering again on Thursday, May 14, as a Bike to Work Day Captain, so we caught up with her to find out why she’s excited about being a part of Bike to Work Day.

How did you first get involved? What motivated you to start volunteering?
The SF Bicycle Coalition was one of the first organizations I joined when I moved here from Milwaukee. I met a couple at Pi Bar my first week here and they told me to sign up and get involved. I was so super impressed at San Francisco’s bike infrastructure and public support of bikes as transportation. (I’ve since learned that everything can be improved.) I worked in public transit before moving here and thought volunteering would be a great way to stay involved in the sustainable transit even though I’d moved out of the industry professionally.

What’s your favorite thing about Bike to Work Day?
The first-timers! It seriously warms my heart to see the road filled with cyclists on Bike to Work Day and to hear that many of them are either riding for the first time ever or first time in years.

What do you do when you’re not donating your time to the SF Bicycle Coalition?
I donate my time as a board member of Walk San Francisco. I love how both organizations, along with other community partners, are working together to achieve Vision Zero. By day I plan a design conference called TYPO San Francisco, which is actually this week! When I actually have free time, it’s spent biking around the city to meet up with friends at shows or in a park or finding other random adventures.

What advice would you give to someone thinking about volunteering with us on Bike to Work Day?
Plan to block off that second Thursday in May for the rest of your life because you’re going to have so much fun doing this!

Swing by one of our 25 Energizer Stations on Thursday, May 14, to talk with great volunteers like Meghan, who can help you join or renew your SF Bicycle Coalition membership, tell you more about our work and hook you up with a free commemorative Bike to Work Day tote bag! Want to get involved? We’d love to have your help!
