SUMMARY:Hyper-Local History of the Bicycle in Golden Gate Park Bike Ride
DESCRIPTION:Join us for a meandering bike ride through Golden Gate Park to explore the legacy of bicycling in the park since the 1890s. Whether you’re a history buff or you just enjoy a bike ride through the park with friendly folks\, this bike tour will be a great time. We’ll pedal along routes and paths that have been used by cyclists for 125 years and stop to learn about the history of local bicycle culture along the way. \nSan Franciscans have always been early adopters of technology and the bicycle was no exception. As soon as the bike became widely available in the 1890s\, it was pedaled into the park\, where “bicyclers” formed social and recreational groups. They formed clubs and held races. They also encountered horses\, horse-drawn carriages\, pedestrians\, and eventually automobiles. \nSister-and-brother-team Nancy and Jonathan Botkin will lead this tour through the history and geography of the bicycle in Golden Gate Park. Jonathan is a bicycle historian\, specializing in the bicycle culture in San Francisco of the late 1800s-early 1900s. Nancy is obsessed with the roads and paths of Golden Gate Park\, and co-author of the new book Discovering Golden Gate Park with Marta Lindsey (of WalkSF). \nBring water and snacks. Wear a helmet\, plus sunscreen and layers for our changeable weather. \nMeet at the statue in the Panhandle near Fell and Baker! The ride will be 5 1/2 miles one-way. The route is exclusively within the park\, mostly on paved roads\, but there will be some riding on dirt trails (but still doable on road bikes). Preview the route here.

SUMMARY:Adult Learn to Ride
DESCRIPTION:It’s never too late to learn to bicycle! Instructors will work one-on-one to assist participants in learning the basics of balancing\, starting\, stopping and steering a bike\, as well as proper helmet fit and adjustment. Most people learn to ride their bike while taking the class\, but even if they don’t\, they will leave with tips to continue teaching themselves to ride. \n\nThe first step will be balancing on your bicycle; instructors will first remove the pedals and lower the seat enough so that you can put both feet on the ground.\nYou’ll learn balance by taking longer and longer steps until you’re “gliding.”\nThen\, once you’ve got that down\, we’ll show you how to turn confidently and stop smoothly.\nOnce you feel comfortable\, we’ll reinstall the pedals\, so you can incorporate pedaling and learning to steer\, and how to steer precisely in circles and figure-eights.\nYou’ll finish your lesson by learning how to shift gears so you can handle hills and prepare for more city riding.\n\nIf you’re bringing your own bike to the class\, please be sure you can sit on your bike seat with both feet flat on the ground. \nAll participants MUST either bring a bike or rent a bike in advance. Bikes will not be available for rental at the class. If you don’t have a bicycle\, you will be contacted before the class with information on how to rent one. If you are unable to afford a bike rental (about $33)\, we have a limited budget to cover bike rentals for students. Please contact Qamuuqin (info below) about covering the cost. \nPlease contact Qamuuqin Maxwell (qmaxwell@sfbike.org) with any questions about this program. \n\n \n   \nThis class is part of the SFMTA’s Bicycle Safety Education program\, presented in partnership  with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. It is made possible by the San Francisco County Transportation  Authority through a grant from Proposition L Local Transportation Sales Tax Funds.
