Eastern SF’s Newest Type of Bike Lane: 13th Street

One of our city’s most dangerous corridors for people who bike is now a lot safer. (At least, going one direction.)

People frequently bike 13th Street, whether out of necessity, convenience or unaware that it has been one of San Francisco’s deadliest streets for people on two wheels. Thanks to the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA), the addition of a parking-protected bike lane going westbound between Folsom and Bryant is a big improvement. Now we need to work together as a city to see safety improvements for people travelling east. Please join the campaign today to see safety improvements on both sides of 13th Street.

Last week, the completion of San Francisco’s first parking-protected bike lane outside of Golden Gate Park dramatically improved the safety of 13th Street, going one direction. Thirteenth Street is an important route for many people biking to and from the 4th and King Caltrain Station. It’s also a lifeline for many San Franciscans of modest means living in the Mission or in the South of Market.

Over the coming weeks we aim to educate not only people biking, but also people driving about this novel type of bike lane: where to park cars, how to pass other people biking and what to do if the bike lane is blocked. (Hint: Take the lane!)

Beyond education, our work on 13th Street is not done. We need an eastbound bike lane on the south side of 13th Street, and you can help make it happen.
