Golden Gate Park Bike Tour: 100 Years of Reclaimed Spaces

Saturday, October 22, 2022 @ 10:30 am - 12:30 pm

Join us for a timely tour of one of our nation’s greatest parks. This leisurely five-mile bike ride through Golden Gate Park will explore the history of Golden Gate Park’s roadways and paths. We’ll talk about the efforts to keep the park from being overwhelmed by automobiles since 1901, when the first horseless carriages came to San Francisco.

Did you know there used to be a road where the Rose Garden is? That the Skatin’ Place used to be a park entrance for cars? That Marx Meadow was originally Marx Meadow Drive? If you’re old enough, you might even remember driving down Middle Drive in a car. Can you guess the origin of “Speedway Meadow”? We’ll be visiting these and many other spaces in the park that used to be roadways but are now open spaces for pedestrians, equestrians, cyclists and picnickers.

The ride comes at a critical time! We were thrilled the Board of Supervisors voted to add JFK to this list of permanently open roads. Unfortunately, the upcoming election could change that, so we will also be talking about ways to support the campaign to keep JFK car-free in the last few weeks before the election.

RSVP on Eventbrite. Bring your own bicycle along with water and a snack.

The tour will end at Ocean Beach.

Please contact Rachel Clyde (rclyde@sfbike.org‬) with any questions about this ride.
