This on-bike class will focus on the bike-handling skills you need to safely and confidently ride in city traffic. The class will be conducted in a car-free space, and is the second in the Smart City Cycling sequence. Smart City Cycling 1: Classroom or Intro to Biking in SF (formerly Intro to Urban Bicycling) is a prerequisite for this course. If you have not already taken them, you can register here or here.

Topics covered include:

• How to ride with one hand in order to signal
• Scanning over one’s shoulder while maintaining a straight line
• Crash-avoidance maneuvers

This class will prepare you for Smart City Cycling 3: Road Practice, in which you will take your new skills out to streets.

All participants MUST either bring a bike or rent a bike in advance. Bikes will not be available for rental at the class. If you don’t have a bicycle, we will send information on how to rent one for the class. The cost of bike rental (if needed) will be covered by you, the participant. If the cost of a bike rental (about $20) is a challenge for you, please email Eliana@sfbike.org or call at‪ (415) 409-9416‬, as we have some limited funding available for rentals.

At this time, this class is limited to people 18 years old and above.

COVID-19 protocols: We will be following the protocols laid out by SFDPH here during this class, including face coverings, social distancing, and reduced class sizes. Masks, gloves, wipes, and hand sanitizer will be available at the class.
