Bike Talk: Bike Activism in Barcelona

Thursday, June 29, 2023 @ 6:00 pm - 7:30 pm

Free

Cosmopolitan SF biking residents frequently look to Amsterdam, Copenhagen, and Berlin for inspiration, but what about Barcelona? The SF Bicycle Coalition hosts researcher and advocate Jordi Honey-Rosés for a discussion of efforts in the Catalonian city to improve biking for all its residents.

In the last decade, Barcelona has been at the forefront of innovative urban transformation by creating pedestrian and bike friendly streets. Barcelona’s Superblocks and School Streets programs have received international attention for their success at taking away space from cars and prioritizing people. The changes are also the result of strong pressure from environmental and cycling activists demanding cleaner air and healthier urban environments. The cycling community in Barcelona is well organized, connected, tech-savvy and effective at mobilizing resources. Cycling activists and several citizen-led initiatives are playing a key role in advancing the cycling agenda in Barcelona. This talk will discuss citizen-led initiatives in Barcelona that are working to change the city, including the BiciBus or Bike Bus and la Revolta Escolar or School Revolt, a parent led initiative demanding safer school streets.

Jordi Honey-Rosés is the Director of City Lab Barcelona at the Institute of Environmental Science and Technology of the Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona (ICTA-UAB). He is an environmental planner by training, who has published widely on urban experiments and impact evaluation in leading international scientific journals. His teaching has been recognized with the prestigious University Killam Teaching Award from the University of British Columbia (UBC). Prior to joining ICTA-UAB, he was Associate Professor with tenure at the School of Community and Regional Planning at the University of British Columbia (2013-2021). He has degrees from UC Berkeley, Harvard University and the University of Illinois at Urbana Champaign.

As with all our events, attendees are asked to abide by our community agreements.
