Meet our new executive director: Janelle Wong

After an extensive national search to find a visionary leader to help forge the next chapter for the organization, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition’s Board of Directors was proud to realize we had such a leader within our own staff. We are excited to announce Janelle Wong as the organization’s next executive director!

Janelle Wong (she/her) has been on staff at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition for eight years, working closely in operations and finance, and has most recently served as the organization’s Interim Deputy Director, further demonstrating her readiness for this new position and commitment to our mission. Over these eight years, Janelle has shown extensive skill and knowledge in growing the budget and team capacity of the organization, managing contracts, and increasing revenue to expand our programmatic work.

When asked about the future of the organization, Janelle explained: “When I started working at the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition, there were only 11 staff — now we have 22! I am so thrilled to see how far we’ve come in the last few years, and am enthusiastic about our ability to grow and expand our work in the years to come.”

“As a woman of color, a biking parent, and a long-time resident of the westside, I am proud to represent and lead your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. I look forward to connecting with more of our members that I have yet to meet, and ensuring that our work prioritizes the needs of residents, families, and meeting underserved communities where they are at. With all of that, I feel extremely confident that we will continue to create a more safe, just, and livable future for our city.”

With Janelle’s leadership, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition Board and Staff look forward to embracing a spirit of change and harnessing the energy of the moment to continue the work of realizing the promise of a truly bicycle-friendly San Francisco. Valencia Street improvements are back online

In early March, the San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) officially announced that it would be resuming the design and outreach process for the Valencia Street Improvement Project. This comes as welcome news to many, as the project was effectively put on hold with the onset of the pandemic in early 2020. As the project comes back online, the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is working to re-engage community stakeholders and people who hold the corridor near and dear to their hearts.

Valencia is itself one of the beating hearts of the Mission. Not only is it a thriving commercial hub, but it also plays an important role as a key North/South connection that links many areas of the city to downtown and beyond. The infrastructure we currently have on Valencia Street began its process with our work in 2017. A few years later, Valencia Street from Market to 15th became a truly robust bicycle corridor, with parking protected bike lanes, pedestrian islands, and soft hit posts. In 2019, as the next phases began, the project found itself a topic of much contention as the needs of merchants and stakeholders became increasingly complex. Just as the project was moving forward, the onset of the COVID-19 outbreak put a hard stop to life as we knew it, and the improvements for Valencia Street.

With all the work that has gone into the project thus far, there are still many obstacles that people face when traveling on Valencia. Cars and trucks double parking in the bike lanes is a constant, and mixes of pedestrian, bike, delivery, and merchant use bleeds into the space. All of these needs and uses ,as well as issues with trash and other debris in the bike lane, are all hurdles that must be accounted for as well as solved through this project. Our goal is to ensure that future infrastructure provides safety for people of all comfort levels on Valencia.

While the project scope is still being developed by the SFMTA, it aims to build on the protected bike lane that currently ends at 15th street. As of now, there are a few design alternatives that are being worked on: side running bike lanes and a two-way center running bike lane. We are excited about and fully support a side running concept, as this provides a more welcoming environment for all comfort levels.

We are thrilled that Valencia is moving forward and want your input as this project develops. Stay up to date and find out how you can get involved by signing up for our email list. If you are passionate about Valencia and have any comments, questions or concerns, reach out to Malcolm Jaramillo at mjaramillo@sfbike.org

Stay Up to Date on Valencia

It’s the final stretch of the Car-Free JFK Campaign – let’s win this.

We are so close to winning a permanent Car-Free John F. Kennedy Drive in Golden Gate Park, and this week’s developments have already made history.

Last Thursday, March 10, we turned out at City Hall for a joint special meeting of the SFMTA Board and Rec and Park Board to hear the staff program proposal for Car-Free JFK Dr. Our team of advocates and supporters filled up half the room in City Hall, and we had over 100 people make a public comment overwhelmingly supporting Car-Free JFK! After hours of public comment, the MTA and RPD Boards passed the proposal!

On Tuesday, March 15, Mayor London Breed introduced her groundbreaking legislation to make JFK Dr. permanently car-free at the Board of Supervisors meeting. This legislation gets us one major step closer to making JFK Dr. a safe, people-first promenade in Golden Gate Park, and is just the beginning of a safer, accessible, and more livable San Francisco. The SF Bicycle Coalition and our partners have been working for decades to get where we are today, and this work can only come to fruition with strong, visionary leadership from our city leaders.

What happens now? Mayor Breed’s legislation for Car-Free JFK Dr., will need to sit for 30 days before any action is taken. Once the 30 days is up, it will go to the Board’s Land Use Committee, likely in mid-April. Then, if it passes committee, the Board of Supervisors will make the final vote for the future of this car-free space. This is where we’ll need all the people power we can get.

We’re in the final stretch – will you stick with us and help ensure we win a Car Free JFK Dr. for San Francisco to enjoy for generations to come? Sign up to receive updates to get involved in the two upcoming Board meetings as well as a rally in April.

WEIGH IN ON THE FUTURE OF BIKE SHARE IN SF

In less than 24 hours the Board of Supervisors will be discussing the idea of a city-owned and operated bike share system. This is our first opportunity to support a municipal bike share system that is affordable and accessible to all San Franciscans.

Since it was first introduced, the SF Bicycle Coalition has supported bike share. Most importantly, we believe a successful bike share system is one that is accessible and affordable to all. In 2015, the SF Bicycle Coalition started the Bike Share for All campaign to push for a more equitable bike share system. In partnership with other bicycle advocacy organizations across the Bay Area we won low-income membership programs, equitable geographic service areas, and local hiring commitments written into the contracts with bike share companies.

Today, Lyft is the sole company operating bike share in San Francisco and the original vision for Bike Share for All is far off.

As we continue to see prices go up and ridership decline under the current for-profit bike share model, it is imperative to support bold ideas like a city-owned and operated system.

A municipal bike share system can make biking accessible to all San Franciscans, compliment public transportation, and get us closer to our climate change goals of 80% sustainable modes by 2030.

In order to make it happen we need your support today! Write a letter of support to the Board of Supervisors by 5pm today or call in to the Government, Audit, and Oversight committee this Thursday (2/17) at 10 AM to give public comment.

THE RESULTS ARE IN: OUR 2022 BOARD ELECTION WINNERS

The staff administrators of the recent SF Bicycle Coalition board elections congratulate the winners: Jean Kao, Allison Arieff, Jason Ford, Marie Jonas, Karen Wiener, Sarah Barnes, and Lisa Ratner.

Members in good standing by January 14 cast a total of 456 tallied online ballots. Eight abstentions were also submitted.

Voting and tabulation was administered using third-party vendor ElectionBuddy to meet the ranked-choice voting rules added to our bylaws by the board in 2017. Most members were able to vote without any assistance from the election administrators. However, as expected with any vendor that provides ranked-choice voting services, a small subset of members required assistance to vote due to issues with email deliverability into their inbox. With significantly increased support from election administrators and other staff, all members who sent an email to boardvoting@sfbike.org were assisted and able to vote.

Details on the entire 2022 Board of Directors election process are available here. And details on this election’s round-by-round results are here. For more information about multi-winner ranked-choice voting, click here. This election was conducted using Meek’s Single Transferable Vote method.

We are delighted that every declared candidate was able to be seated on the board.

The first board meeting with the newly elected members will be held on February 22, 2022. We look forward to working with the winners, who will serve terms of two years on our board of directors alongside the eight existing board members whose terms have not expired. And we thank you, our wonderful members, for participating in this election.

We also want to express our gratitude to outgoing board members who chose not to run for re-election: Constance Cavallas, Stephen Braitsch, Manoj Madhavan, and Tyler Morris. Thanks for your years of service.

Not yet a member or need to renew? Join or renew today to support our work for better biking all year long.

About SF Bicycle Coalition Board Elections

The San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is governed by an all-volunteer Board of Directors. Any SF Bicycle Coalition member can run for the board. The board is responsible for ensuring the organization’s financial health and achievement of its mission. The 15-member board is elected by the membership. There is a board election each year and terms are two years. Seven seats on the board of directors will be elected by the membership this year for the term beginning at the first board meeting following this election until the new board is seated following the 2022 board elections. A full timeline and detailed description of the process can be found here.

This will be our fifth board election using ranked-choice voting, giving members the chance to rank their votes in order of preference. Our board of directors adopted ranked-choice voting in the hope that it will encourage increased member participation in our elections and our work. For more information about multi-winner ranked-choice voting, click here.

If you are a member who is interested in learning more about board service in future years, please contact us at boardnomination@sfbike.org.

Allison Arieff

she/hers

My name is Allison Arieff. I’m a longtime resident of San Francisco and I believe it should be a walking/biking/transit-first city. I’m frustrated and saddened by the battles over Safe Streets, the Great Highway and Car-Free JFK. But I’m also emboldened by these challenges. We can and must do more—much more—to make our streets safer and more equitable for all people.

I’ve spent the last decade advocating for better streets both through my work at the urban planning think tank, SPUR, as well as in my New York Times column, where I have regularly addressed the need for more thoughtfully designed, walkable neighborhoods. (I also wrote a piece called “Cars Are Death Machines” and I stand by it).

I want to live in a place designed for people not cars. I believe the Bike Coalition can be instrumental in making that happen and I’d be honored to be part of the effort. Thank you.

Sarah Barnes

she/hers

I am a deeply optimistic individual working on the future of urban mobility, and in particular bike-riding and bikeshare. Since moving to San Francisco in August 2020, I have become an active member of SFBC’s Women and Non-Binary Coffee Club and have volunteered at events throughout the year, including Volunteer Nights, Winterfest, and Bike to Anywhere Day.

On the board, I would leverage my years working in bikeshare in the UK and US to help advance the organization’s mission. In particular, my years of experience working with governments through procurement of bikeshare systems has given me a detailed understanding of how to successfully work with diverse constituents to meet shared goals and lower barriers for riding.

I also have extensive expertise in urban and transportation planning, holding degrees in human geography and city design. I share my thoughts on the future of transport in a weekly transportation + technology newsletter.

I appreciate your consideration!

Jason Ford

he/his

Jason’s goal is to connect and expand San Francisco’s car-free and slow street network so anyone ages 8 and up can ride safely. He is best known for his Safe Routes Map.

Father to two boys, his family’s primary transportation is a pair of cargo ebikes. School, groceries, work, fun… you name it, the bikes are how they get around rain or shine everyday. This is why Jason is passionate about San Francisco’s safe routes.

A lifelong cyclist, he knows firsthand the bike’s power to transform physical health, mental health, and the earth’s health. No one should feel at risk in pursuit of these benefits.

Car-free and slow streets enable all San Franciscans young and old to bike, run, walk, stroll, or use a mobility device comfortably to any destination in the city.

I would be honored to have your support!

Marie Jonas

she/hers

I’m an active member, volunteer, and incumbent board member, ready to serve this organization for a third term. SF Bicycle Coalition helped get me on the bike and keep me there – I want to pay it forward, building a strong, resilient, inclusive organization.

What I bring critical is experience and perspective, having served on the Executive Committee and Transition Task Force (overseeing our Executive Director search). My professional experience as an attorney  who represents nonprofits supports our oversight role. This unique moment presents challenges and opportunities, which I can help take on.

Supporting our community is one of my priorities: like sharing my joy of riding by co-planning pandemic rides.  You’ll also find me at our Women + Non-Binary Bike SF coffee club. This year, I’m participating in AIDS/LifeCycle for the third time, fundraising and forging connections with an amazing crew.

I would be honored to have your support!

Jean Kao

she/hers

I’ve been a member and volunteer for 15 years and I’m honored to serve as the current Board President. What I’m most excited about at the SFBC is the continued development of our bicycle education programs and bringing the joy of bicycling to more people in our community.

For my next – and last – term my goals are to guide the organization through the process for our next strategic plan and build up a leadership pipeline on the board. My skills include strategic thinking, project management, team building, and group facilitation. In my time on the board I’ve served on the finance, board development, and personnel committees.

Outside of the board I work at Populus.ai helping cities provide safe, sustainable, and equitable transportation options. I also love bike camping when I can. If you see me around town on my green vintage mixte be sure to say hi!

Lisa Ratner

they/them/she/hers

You may have seen Lisa parading down Page Street on Halloween dressed as a Slow Street, or spraying chalk art on the sidewalk for Bike to Work Day. She is a bike advocacy enthusiast and has been a member for over 10 years. Lisa believes that providing safe bicycle infrastructure in all our neighborhoods can help mitigate climate change, socio-economic disparity, obesity, and isolation.

Professionally, Lisa has worked in the transportation sector as a user experience researcher on a range of projects, including: electric bike share, road safety, public private partnerships, and street design tools. Her research focus has been on inclusivity – ensuring products and services address the needs of under-resourced communities, seniors, people with disabilities, people who don’t speak English, and unbanked individuals.

Lisa will advance our shared goals of what more bikes can bring to our community.

Karen Wiener

she/hers

I am a biking mom and co-owner of The New Wheel, an electric bicycle shop in Bernal Heights. My life’s work is to increase the ease, joy, and utility of using bicycles in San Francisco and the Bay Area.

I bring a deep understanding of the practical requirements of bicyclists, an appreciation for the role of small business in our community, and direct connections to key decision makers in the bicycle and electric bicycle industry. I have a focused interest in the success of bicycles as transportation.

I will work to help support the Bicycle Coalition to both advocate effectively for current cyclists and to support an increasingly large and diverse constituency of San Franciscans as they discover the joy, efficiency, and practicality of cycling as transportation.

I would be honored to be your representative on the Board and will work hard to be an effective advocate!
