Bike the Vote with Yes on D

Our streets are flooded with cars like never before.

In a public opinion poll commissioned by the SF Chamber of Commerce earlier this year, 82% of respondents said congestion has gotten worse in the last few years. You feel it too, from the influx of drivers parked in bike lanes or the crunch you feel biking anywhere downtown. So what’s really happening on our streets?

While California’s car culture still thrives, a new phenomenon has brewed over the past decade: ridesharing. Recent reports show that companies like Uber and Lyft make up 13% of all vehicle miles traveled in San Francisco. Uber and Lyft trips alone account for 1.2 million miles a day. And during a targeted, two-month enforcement effort that the SF Police Department conducted in 2017, our traffic enforcement officers found that TNC drivers committed 64% of downtown traffic violations during this time period.

The concept of ridesharing is so new that even the term has evolved several times over. Some may question who is providing the “rides” and what’s actually being “shared” in the term “rideshare.” In California, a common term used is transportation network company to broadly describe private entities that profit off of the use of public streets and infrastructure. Some of these companies prefer the term mobility as a service to describe the shift from needing to own a car for transportation to the ability to instead hail a car on demand as a transportation service.

Whatever you call it, we are grappling with the negative impacts as policy makers struggle to keep up with the pace of these emerging mobility services and technologies. What can we do to reinvest in our city, our streets, and our people?

This November, San Francisco voters finally have an opportunity to require companies like Uber and Lyft to invest in Muni and street safety.

Proposition D asks voters whether we should levy a business tax on rideshare companies like Uber and Lyft through a 3.25% tax on every trip that starts in San Francisco. Half of the estimated $30 million raised annually would go to Muni to improve transit service and reliability while the other half would go to funding bicycle and pedestrian street safety projects. Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud to endorse Proposition D.

We know that this tax is far from a panacea to heal our congestion ills, but this is a small yet mighty measure. Yes on D means that we recognize companies like Uber and Lyft need to pay into our transportation system. As rideshare companies put an increasing impact on our streets and our bike lanes, Yes on D says that those companies need to share a portion of their profits rather than continuing to cede public goods to private gains. Vote Yes on D.

The Fight for Market Street is Here

A single vote on October 15 will determine the fate of Market Street for the next generation and beyond. After a decade of advocacy, the project that’s ready to be approved will include a complete transformation of San Francisco’s most important street, including fully protected bike lanes as well as a clear message: get cars off of Market Street.

RSVP for Market

For more than a decade, your SF Bicycle Coalition and our members have been working with City staff on designs for a new Market Street. Finally, in two weeks, the SF Municipal Transportation Agency (SFMTA) Board of Directors will decide whether to approve protected bike lanes and car restrictions on Market Street from the Embarcadero to Octavia. This project is our once-in-a-generation opportunity to overhaul our most important downtown corridor, and this is our one shot to get this project approved. For our city, for our environment and for our safety, for Market Street we need to make noise and win this vote on October 15.

Rally for Market Street
Tuesday October 15, 12:15PM
City Hall Steps

On October 15, we will rally on the steps of City Hall to make our demands for Market clear: this project needs to happen and it needs to happen now. Once we’ve heard from City leaders, we’ll head into the SFMTA Board meeting and pack the room to make sure they approve this project unanimously.

No more waiting for life-saving improvements and no more excuses about getting cars off of Market. The time is now for Market Street and we need to act.

Bike the Vote with Suzy Loftus

Suzy Loftus does it all.

She has a decade of experience in law enforcement, starting with her work in the San Francisco District Attorney’s office, to the California Department of Justice, to her current role where she serves as legal counsel for the San Francisco Sheriff’s Department.

But it was Suzy’s five years on the Police Commission where she began partnering closely with the San Francisco Bicycle Coalition. During her tenure, she brought traffic violence and street safety to the forefront and became a champion of Vision Zero, our city’s commitment to ending all serious injuries and fatalities caused by traffic crashes by 2024.

In her own words, Suzy shared with us that “collisions are not just accidents and fatalities that can be prevented must always be a priority — anything that is predictable is preventable.” But it takes a village to get there. Long-term success is “about partnership, prevention, measuring progress and accountability. Most importantly, the community must be included in assessments of progress on where we need to focus more attention and work.”

Suzy Loftus attends Assemblymember Phil Ting’s Family Bike Fair at AP Giannini Middle School in April with her daughter Maureen.

As President of the Police Commission, Suzy successfully pushed for a resolution committing the SF Police Department to do their part in achieving Vision Zero. This resolution called for data-driven enforcement that required regular reporting on progress and phasing out antiquated language like describing traffic crashes as “accidents.”

But we know that wasn’t enough. When our fight to authorize automated speed enforcement in San Francisco heated up in 2015, once again, it was Suzy who championed legislation for the SF Police Department to formally support the use of this technology. “We have to invest in tools and best practices that keep people safe,” said Suzy. “Automated speed enforcement is a proven safety technique. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration shows that fixed camera reduce injury crashes by almost 25% and mobile cameras reduce injury collisions by up to 50%.” And if elected as District Attorney, she’s ready to take that fight once again to change state law to authorize its use.

At the end of the day, this is a personal issue for Suzy and her family. She tells us, “I walk my youngest daughter to school every morning and my eldest daughter walks to the bus stop to get to high school. They walk and play outside and I want them to be safe, just like I want all children to be safe on our streets.”

There is no question to Suzy’s commitment to street safety, and her years of leadership and follow-through distinguished her from the rest of the candidates for District Attorney. Your San Francisco Bicycle Coalition is proud to endorse Suzy Loftus for District Attorney this November.

Our Members Are Fighting For Market Street 2020

A people-powered movement means that our 10,000-plus members pedal forward every one of our campaign victories. So when it comes to a project like Market Street 2020, our once-in-a-generation opportunity to transform San Francisco’s premiere downtown corridor, it takes a lot of people power to win.

With approvals coming up on October 15, our volunteers are hitting the streets and talking to everyday folks biking on Market about what’s going on, what’s planned, and how they can help.

Volunteer for Market Street 2020

Meet Steven and Stefania, two of the many members who have stepped up on our Market Street 2020 campaign and volunteered for streetside outreach. If you’ve biked up Market Street on your evening commute in the past week, you may have seen them talking to people at Market and Octavia and passing out flyers with information as hundreds of people bike through.

“Only one in ten people I spoke with said they knew something about Better Market Street,” said Steven. “When people hear about it, they love the project.”

If you bike on Market Street today, it’s easy to love this project, which would finally put people first. A future Market Street would have fully protected bike lanes from Embarcadero to Octavia, and restrictions on private cars.

“Many people I spoke with all agreed they don’t feel safe riding Market street right now,” said Stefania. “Just while we were out there on Market and Octavia, 3 cars parked in the bike lane over the course of an hour.”

With this project on the line, we need your help. There are less than three weeks left until this project is considered for approvals. Join Steven and Stefania today and help us get the word out about how we’re going to transform Market Street together.

Be part of Market Street’s transformation.

This is it: A Transformed Market Street is up for a Vote

A single vote on October 15 will determine the fate of Market Street for the next generation and beyond. After a decade of advocacy, the project that’s ready to be approved will include a complete transformation of San Francisco’s most important street, including fully protected bike lanes as well as a clear message: get cars off of Market Street.

The stakes are high, and we need you on October 15.

RSVP for Market

Next month, the seven members of the SF Municipal Transportation Agency board will determine the fate of Better Market Street. If this project is approved, Market Street would prioritize people first, with fully protected bike lanes from the Embarcadero to Octavia and restrictions to get cars off Market from Embarcadero to Gough.

But approvals are only the first step, and we need change immediately. Real victory means getting cars off of Market this year and starting construction on protected bike lanes in 2020. Will you join the thousands of other members who are pushing to transform San Francisco’s main corridor?

A decade of organizing has culminated these past few weeks with the launch of Market Street 2020, our campaign to see cars off Market this year and ground broken on protected bike lanes in 2020. With our members leading the way, we’ve reviewed designs, brainstormed actions and are flyering on Market St. several times a week to help grow our movement and win on October 15.

Everything is riding on the SFMTA board’s vote. Years of work will either be approved or scrapped, and we need the collective voice of our members to make this win possible.

We’ll see you there.
